What’s the Difference Between Simple and Surgical Extractions?

When it comes to having a tooth pulled, there are two types of extractions: simple and surgical. Even though the end results may appear to be the same, the procedures themselves are not.

Unless you’re having multiple teeth removed at one time – such as when planning for a denture or implants – a simple extraction is usually completed by your family dentist. Your tooth is essentially loosened and then lifted from its socket.

However, if the tooth is broken off, fractured into separate pieces, or impacted, removing it isn’t so simple after all. Most of these cases are referred to our Lafayette oral surgery facility so that they can be removed in a safe and efficient manner under some form of sedation.

Oral Anatomy to Keep in Mind

If your tooth is within close proximity to facial nerves, sinuses, or other teeth, our oral surgeon will take extra care to limit the risk of those anatomical structures are not damaged during its removal.

When a cyst or infection is associated with the tooth, a surgical extraction ensures that the healthy structures adjacent to your tooth are preserved during the extraction process. Any additional surgical steps (such as biopsies or cyst removal) are incorporated into the same visit.

Your Future Plans

It’s best to have an end goal in mind when you’re planning to have a surgical extraction. Unless it’s a wisdom tooth, you’ll want to plan to replace your tooth in a timely manner to preserve natural biting patterns and bone support. Dental implants offer promising results when we integrate them into the area of your recently extracted tooth. A well cared for implant can last for the rest of your life.
