What Does Wisdom Tooth Pain Feel Like?

Tooth pain can be difficult to pinpoint. If you’ve been experiencing some problems lately towards the back of your mouth, it may be your wisdom teeth.

What are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the third molars in the very back of your mouth. There are four total - two on the upper and lower arch, respectively.  These teeth start forming within the jaw bone when we’re children. As young adults, they may begin to cut through the gum sometime during our teen years or into our late 20s.

Some lucky people will form wisdom teeth, but they never erupt or cause any problems. The luckiest people don’t form any wisdom teeth at all! These patients have an advantage because third molars tend to cause more problems than not. In fact, in most cases, it’s best to remove them before complications pop up at all.

Recognizing Wisdom Tooth Pain

Knowing some signs and symptoms of wisdom tooth pain can help you better deal with the situation.  Commonly patients complain of situations like:

  • Pain and/or swelling in the teeth further back in your mouth

  • A bad taste or smell

  • Puss and/or bleeding

  • Pain in the jaw

  • Swollen or sore lymph nodes

  • An earache and/or a headache

  • Difficulty opening

  • A Fever

Also, keep in mind that these symptoms don’t start until the age of about 16 or 17. But they can occur at any time after that. And the signs and symptoms of wisdom tooth pain comes and goes in most cases.  You may get some relief for a while, but the discomfort usually pops up again shortly thereafter. Getting them extracted is likely inevitable, and you should do it sooner, rather than later.

Having teeth pulled can be a scary thing, but when you put your trust in Coal Creek Oral Surgery and Dental Implant Center, you’ve chosen the best dentist for wisdom tooth extraction. Lafayette residents who take advantage of Dr. Hayes’ advanced training and education, receive top-notch care.

Why You Should Consider a Wisdom Tooth Extraction

A lot of people don’t have enough room in their mouths for wisdom teeth - which is partly why they cause so many problems. They’re so far back that they’re nearly impossible to clean, so these third molars decay very easily.  They can even cause the teeth next to them to get cavities.

In most cases, when all other teeth are present, our third molars don’t even serve a function.  We do most of our chewing with the teeth two or three positions in front of them. So, you can see why it’s best to just have these teeth removed before they cause further complications or pain.
